Welcome to the Neuropositive Podcast—a new space designed to celebrate neurodivergence in every form. I'm your host, Phyllis Brasenau. Today marks the beginning of our journey together, and while I'm both terrified and excited to be here, I assure you the core intention of this show is to create an affirming community for all.
Why Neuropositive?
My deepest desire in launching this podcast is to foster a supportive community for neurodivergent individuals. As a neurodivergent mother to neurodivergent daughters, I've often found this experience to be both frustrating and isolating. Through sharing my personal stories and insights, I hope we can create a more connected world. Whether you are neurodivergent yourself, a parent, caregiver, educator, or simply someone interested in learning more, I believe this podcast will have something valuable for you.
Diving into the Heart of the Matter
Throughout each episode, we’re going to delve into topics like Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, educational options, public school IEPs, and workplace accommodations, among others. We’ll also explore late-in-life diagnoses and work towards changing the cultural narrative around disabilities and neurodivergence. By shining a light on these subjects, we aim to confront and unlearn ableism together.
If you align with any of these roles or are connected to a neurodivergent individual, you’re in the right place. Neurodivergence is more common than most people think, and this podcast is here to help us learn and grow together.
Sharing Diverse Experiences
In addition to sharing my personal experiences, I'm committed to amplifying other neurodivergent voices. Our lived experiences make us the experts of our own stories, and it’s crucial to reclaim this truth. By inviting diverse voices into the conversation, we open ourselves up to learn and evolve in our understanding.
A Welcoming Space for All
It’s important that the Neuro Positive Podcast meets listeners where they are, recognizing that we’re all at different stages of our journey. My vision is to create an accepting space that encourages growth and understanding rather than judgment. If you're here with an open mind, I believe we can learn and inspire change together without shaming what we don’t yet know.
Navigating Intersectionality
As we discuss neurodiversity and neurodivergence, we cannot overlook how these issues intersect with race, class, gender, and socioeconomic status. These conversations may be intense, but they are integral to understanding how social justice and inclusion play a role in these narratives.
The Duality of Passion and Joy
Personally, it’s only now, entering this middle season of life, that I embrace the "multitudes" within me. I firmly believe we can ardently fight for justice and inclusivity while radiating joy and positivity. Neuro Positive is a testament to this belief—a commitment to having real, impactful discussions while embodying a spirit of optimism.
